GPT-6.1 Sol: OpenAI's recommended Codex model

Released on September 29, 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol is the newer Sol and OpenAI's recommended model for complex coding in Codex. Here is its verified price and limits, where it fits between Astra and Luna, and how to make it your Codex default.

Quick answer

Make GPT-6.1 Sol your default Codex model for feature work and multi-file changes. Set it with codex -m gpt-6.1-sol for one run, /model inside a session, or model = "gpt-6.1-sol" in ~/.codex/config.toml. Escalate to GPT-6 Astra when a failed run costs more than its 5x token premium, and hand well-specified, repeatable work to GPT-6 Luna.

Where this model fits

OpenAI recommends GPT-6.1 Sol for complex coding and agentic workflows and describes it as near-Astra performance at one fifth of Astra's token price ($2/$10 vs $10/$50 per MTok). It replaced GPT-6 Sol as the newer Sol at the same list price, with cached input at $0.10 instead of $0.20, reasoning effort from low to max (no none or minimal), a knowledge cutoff of April 30, 2026, and up to 922K input tokens inside its 1.05M window. In Codex it is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu: Enterprise and Edu admins must enable it, Free and Go plans are not included at launch, and Ultrafast mode is limited to the $500 Pro plan and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans. GPT-6 Sol stays selectable in Codex meanwhile.

When to use it

Use case 1

Default Codex model for feature work and multi-file changes

Use case 2

Long agentic sessions where cached input dominates the bill

Use case 3

Work where Astra's quality is close enough and its price is not
